Greetings!
I am a first-generation settler, white, cisgender, gay/queer Canadian, with Maltese and British parents. I grew up in a working-class family situated in rural and northern Canadian communities. My pronouns are he/him.
I hold an Honours Bachelor of Arts (Drama-in-Education) and Bachelor of Education from the University of Windsor, a Master of Education (International/Global Education) from the University of Alberta, a Graduate Certificate (Higher Education Online Pedagogy) from the University of Illinois-Springfield, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Education) from York University.
I am currently the Canada Research Chair in Critical and Creative Continuous Learning. I am the former Canada Research Chair in Queer, Community and Diversity Education. I am a Full Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada.
I have expertise in:
- Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Organizations
- Teaching and Leading for Diversity
- 2SLGBTQ+-Inclusive Policies and Programs
- Continuous Learning in the Workplace
I conduct extensive research studies, having raised over $2, 200,000 in research funds as a Principal Investigator. I have published 10 books, three special journal issues, and over 70 academic papers in educational administration and adult education. For example, I recently published a solo-authored book, Adventures in Teaching: A Complete Guidebook for Thriving as an International Educator. A list of my publications are best viewed through my Google Scholar account.
I am also one of the producers of the documentary, The Mural Project, which explores the process undertaken to create a 2SLGBTQ+ History Mural in Canada.
I am Editor Emeritus of the Canadian Journal for the Study of Adult Education and President Emeritus of the Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education. In 2022, I was inducted into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame, becoming the 13th Canadian member in its 25-year history. I was also inducted into the Royal Society of Canada (College of New Scholars).
In 2025, I took a bold step and became a TEDx Winnipeg speaker. I shared how courage emerges through discomfort, exploring rural pride events as my example.
I currently sit on the editorial boards for Sex Education: Sexuality, Society and Learning and for New Horizons in Adult Education and Human Resource Development.
Before joining academe, I was a middle school teacher, post-conflict education aid worker, and education programs manager. I also sat on the Board of Directors for Queer Peace International and the Lambda Scholarship Foundation.
That is a bit of my story! I would love to learn yours.
