Greetings!
I am a first-generation settler, white, cisgender, gay/queer Canadian, with Maltese and British parents. I grew up in a working-class family situated in rural and northern communities.
I am originally from the province of Ontario but currently reside in Manitoba. Besides Canada, I have lived and worked in Japan, the United Kingdom, Kosovo, and the United States.
I am the Canada Research Chair in Queer, Community, and Diversity Education and Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada.
I have expertise in:
- Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Organizations
- Teaching and Leading for Diversity
- 2SLGBTQ-Inclusive Policies and Programs
- Working in International and Cross-Cultural Contexts
In addition, I am Editor Emeritus of the Canadian Journal for the Study of Adult Education and President Emeritus of the Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education. In 2022, I was inducted into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame, becoming the 13th Canadian member in its 25-year history. I was also inducted into the Royal Society of Canada (College of New Scholars). In 2023, I was a delegate in the Science Meets Parliament program, which was organized by the Canadian Science Policy Centre and the Office of the Chief Science Advisor.
I love to learn! I hold an Honours Bachelor of Arts (Drama-in-Education) and Bachelor of Education from the University of Windsor, a Master of Education (International/Global Education) from the University of Alberta, a Graduate Certificate (Higher Education Online Pedagogy) from the University of Illinois-Springfield, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Education) from York University.
I have raised over $1,000,000 in research funds as a Principal Investigator. I have extensive experience leading local and international research projects. I am frequently an invited peer reviewer of education programs, grant applications, and journals. I am thrilled to have graduate students work with me from across Canada and internationally.
I have held visiting scholar appointments at the University of Pristina in Mitrovica (Kosovo) and the Faber Residency for Arts, Sciences, and Humanities (Catalonia).
I have published five books, two special journal issues, and over 50 academic papers in educational administration and adult education.
Before joining academe, I was a middle school teacher, post-conflict education aid worker, and educational programs manager. I also sat on the Board of Directors for Queer Peace International and the Lambda Scholarship Foundation.
Nice to meet you!
